Join mixed media artist, author, instructor and calligrapher Caitlin Dundon for a fabulous, energizing and inspirational 2-day workshop for beginners, intermediate and advanced artists! We will start with the basics of your background substrate working with collage versus painted and black or white or tinted gesso. Work on sheets of watercolor paper or bring your favorite canvas or wood panels.
The workshop will cover the basics of simple collage but then take it steps further. We'll use a variety of papers for collage using acrylic soft gels with an overview of the difference between matte medium, soft, regular and heavy gel. Students can work with a “Dream Floral theme or choose to work with abstract imagery or another theme of their choosing. We will explore image collage working with both silhouette with patterned paper, techniques for incorporating color xeroxed imagery and painted imagery.
Discover the magic of layering in mixed media using a variety of techniques:
- gesso washes
- sgraffito and mark-making
- sanding back
- using non-brush wedges/tools for painting
- acrylic soft gel collage
- tinted gel collage
- rubber stamping with gesso, paint and permanent stamp pads
- stenciling with paint and gesso
- reverse stenciling
- stamped and collaged papers
- crackle gel
- color glazing
- hand lettering, stamped and collaged lettering
Students will benefit from daily handouts and critiques with helpful tips for individual problem solving for layout, color and texture. Finally, the class will review a variety of drawing/ink pens/brush pens and fine brushes for adding details like outlines, line work and lettering including dip pens, Pitt pens/Microns, China Markers, Posca pens and Golden high flow and acrylic ink.
There are no mistakes in this workshop. One of the best things about this 2-day workshop is the chance to play and explore with abandon in a safe, encouraging space. Often brilliant discoveries are made when you just create and don't think about what you are trying to achieve.

She obviously knows what she is doing and while she has many years under her belt, she still understands the beginner struggle and how to help people improve." - Aleeza A.
