Introduction to Calligraphy: The Pointed Pen

Instructor: Caitlin Dundon

Sunday, July 23rd, 2017
1:30 pm - 3:30 pm

Location: Studio Works Ballard, 1417 NW 54th Street, Conference Room #249

Fee: $ 55 (includes all tools & materials)
max students: 6

In this enjoyable two-hour, one session intimate workshop - open to total beginners -  students will explore the elegant art of pointed pen calligraphy with old-fashioned style “dip” calligraphy pens - the style used by many wedding calligraphers.

Students will learn how to use black ink and penholder (both right and left-handed writers are encouraged to join the class) as well as recommendations on other inks and papers and how to create the unique thick and thin elegance that is characteristic of the Pointed Pen style (Pointed pens are used to create Copperplate and Spencerian calligraphy as well as most Modern Calligraphy hands). Students will practice lower case and upper case cursive letters and will be encouraged to use their own creativity and this old technique to take the handwriting they already possess and create more elegant handwritten lettering.

All materials are supplied by the instructor, PLUS each student will receive a complimentary Calligraphy Starter Kit  which includes instruction booklet with sample calligraphy alphabets, 1 pen nib, 1 penholder and small starter supply of ink to take home and keep practicing.

Are you Left- Handed? Pointed pens use the same nibs for left or right-handers with the straight penholders. Some left-handers might benefit from purchasing a left-handed oblique penholder here. Don't be shy if you are left-handed, the instructor has helped many left-handers learn how to create some beautiful calligraphy, and no extra tutoring is needed, please join the group class.

Class Signup Policy: Class fees are non-refundable. If you are unable to attend the 1st class and let the instructor know via phone or text (206-817-3479) or email by at least 2 hour before the start of the first class you are allowed one "rollover" to apply your payment to a future 3 week class. No shows will forfeit their payment. Thanks for understanding, as this class is very popular, has limited seating capacity and routinely has students on the wait list. Please don't sign up for a 3 week class if you can't attend all three sessions.
